 Research

My lab studies the mechanisms mediating learning and memory that occur based on responses to our environment, which are caused by synaptic plasticity or in other words changes in synapse activity or structure. The goal of the lab is to identify the mechanisms and signaling pathways causing different forms of plasticity in the hippocampus, the structure involved in spatial and declarative (fact) memory formation, and in other regions of the brain. We hope that by studying what mediates plasticity within different cell types of the hippocampus we will not only better understand normal hippocampal function, but what occurs to alter function in disease states such as Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy.
