 Research

evolutionary, population, & conservation genetics; hybrid zone dynamics & speciation potential, delimiting species boundaries, origin of parthenogenesis, phylogenetics, phylogeography, bioinventory, strengthening scientific intrastructure in Latin America (see countries under 'Area of Discipline')

The herpetology collection: The research collection of amphibians and reptiles housed in the MLBM currently contains about 45,000 cataloged and uncataloged specimens, including several special collections: (1) osteological material of several lizard groups; (2) an extensive collection of chromosome slides (several thousand slides) of lizards of the Sceloporus grammicus complex; and (3) an extensive frozen tissue collection (several thousand individuals) representing extensive phylogeographic sampling designs for several groups of reptiles (primarily lizards and turtles). Associated with these collections are complete sets of the journals Copeia, Great Basin Naturalist, Herpetologica, and Journal of Herpetology, and an extensive reprint collection. The collection contains large holdings of specimens from throughout the Great Basin and the western U.S., Appalachia, parts of Latin America, and a surprising diversity from places like Africa, Madagascar, and several island archipelagoes across the South Pacific. The collection was started by the late Dr. Vasco M. Tanner, in the early 1920s, and flourished under the curation of Dr. Wilmer W. Tanner (1950s 1970s).
