Associate Professor

Dr. Maughan graduated from BYU in 1991 earning a B.S. and an M.S. degree Agronomy.  He received a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Va Tech) in 1994.  After receiving his doctorate, worked for two years as a postdoctoral scientist at the University of Illinois developing improved methods for genetically modifying soybean before accepting a position at Monsanto Company in 1997 where he managed a high-throughput genotyping facility in Ankeny, Iowa.  In 2002 he accepted an appointment to the BYU faculty.  Dr. Maughan grew up in the military, graduating from Seoul America High School.  He served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Diego, Ca.  He is married to Dawn Shanklin (Baltimore, MD) and they have four children.

 Research

As an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant and Animal Sciences at Brigham Young University I work with a team of five Plant Geneticists working to develop solutions to world food problems using cutting edge technologies in plant genomics and biotechnology. My laboratory is focused on development of molecular genetic techniques that aid conventional breeding of under-developed crops in third world countries. My laboratory has on-going projects developing and using genetic markers (SNPs, SSRs, and AFLPs) for marker assisted selection and Agrobacterium-mediated plant transformation for gene expression analysis.
