Professor of Agronomy

Von D. Jolley has been a faculty member at BYU since 1977. He is an agronomist specializing in soil fertility and plant nutrition with emphasis in soil/plant micronutrient interactions. He rejoices in teaching undergraduate and graduate students and is proud to observe their accomplishments. His hydroponic-oriented research in plant nutrition is a source of extensive mentoring opportunities with both graduate and undergraduate students who regularly present at national and international venues under his direction. He served as the chair of the Departments of Agronomy and Horticulture and Plant and Animal Sciences from 1998-2003.and is currently Professor of Agronomy. His devotion to students is reflected in recognitions from the College of Biology and Agriculture as Outstanding Mentor in 2004, in Creative Achievement in 1987, and in Distinguished Faculty Service in 1986.  He was recently elected fellow of both the American Society of Agronomy and Soil Science Society of America.  He is involved extensively in writing/editing and has served as associate editor of Soil Science Society of America Proceedings and Agronomy Journal for nine years and as a member of the editorial board of Journal of Plant Nutrition since 1996.  He and his colleagues helped establish and develop a continuing series of international symposia first held at BYU in 1981 with the thirteenth in France in 2006. His research interests lie in understanding plant physiological responses to micronutrient deficiencies, especially iron, and more recently in development of simple soil fertility tests affordable and useful in third-world agriculture. In addition to service to the university, he is involved in coaching youth sports, scouting and church service.
