 Research

Identify genes responsible for resistance to pests and diseases in horticultural crops, especially tomato and quiona. Much of this research has involved working with the wild species of tomato. Once resistance has been identified, studies are initiated to determine its genetic inheritance. Concurrently, efforts are made to identify molecular markers linked to the gene(s) determined to be responsible for the apparent resistance. Presently, molecular markers linked to genes responsible for resistance to the following tomato diseases are being sought, tomato mottle virus (ToMoV), tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), and fusarium crown rot. Identification of molecular markers linked to these disease resistance genes will aid in their rapid introgression into elite breeding lines. In addition to disease resistance research we have been developing a genetic map for the species Chenopodium quinoa.
