A Broader View

Winter Semester 2005 our college successfully launched "Succeeding Together," a program designed to invite our students to willingly help each other to learn -- a tutoring program. Gratefully, and amazingly, large numbers of students signed up to be tutors. Now, we are taking this Zion idea one step further, of which tutoring will be one of the facets. It is called "Empowering Others." Rather than limiting efforts of students to lift and enable classmates through tutoring alone, we are inviting everyone to carry this Zion idea into every aspect of their learning experience while they are at BYU.

A Zion Way

For years, competitive learning in universities has been the norm, but there is a better and higher way for students to learn. It is the idea of learning together: students willingly share their knowledge, lift each other and together gain more light and understanding than they could alone. This concept can develop a community of learners bonded by love and genuine interest in the success of their classmates. It can create a Zion atmosphere, for Zion is a noncompetitive society. This is the point.

The Bottom Line

The purpose of this effort is to facilitate a change of mind and a change of heart; to create a noncompetitive university society and environment where students are teaching each other and genuinely caring about the success of those around them. In this way all can rise even higher academically and humanly. Dr. Daniel Fairbanks, Dean of Undergraduate Education, said, "Not only will this help the students while they are here, it will have a great impact on the rest of their lives. I think it is wonderful." We invite you to take this upward reach, to truly care about the welfare of those around you and take the time to make a difference.

Should you believe it when they say that...
  • "New Student Orientation (NSO) helps new and transfer students become familiar with the academic, spiritual, social, and personal challenges and opportunities at Brigham Young University"?
  • "It provides information about campus life"?
  • "It also provides learning opportunities for students to become acquainted with the resources available to them on campus"?
  • "New Student Orientation helps students become more fully integrated in the university community"?
