Mentored Research is a variable 6.0 credit option, meaning that you choose how many credits you want to take with a maximum of 6.0 credits.
Steps to Mentored Research:
1. Choose the research you are interested in.
2. Look to see if there is availability and if you have had the pre-requisites required. If none are listed, please contact the professor.
3. Negotiate course and lab work with the professor.
4. Register for 494R--Mentored Research in your major; otherwise it will not count for that redquirement your transcript. Please note that most sections require professor or departmental approval to register for the course. After negotiationg with the professor have them sign your add/drop card or register online depending on the professor's preference.
Please note that each professor has a separate section. If the professor you wish to work with does not have a section listed in the university class schedule, please contact the department secretary, who will make a section available.
Also note that success in a laboratory is most often based upon your genuine interest in the research being performed. Professors are much more willing to work with you if you have already investigated projects that are currently going on and are willing to put in extra time as necessary to perform the research.
ARE YOU A BIOLOGY MAJOR?
If you are a Biology major you must sign up for mentored research under BIOL 494R regardless of the field you are doing research in. If you register under anything else those credits will not count towards your elective credits and the lab you are working in will miss out on $100 of extra funds.
What is BIOL 494R? BIOL 494R is a variable 1.0-6.0 credit per semester option, you must negotiate with a professor and then download the Biology 494R Packet and instructions. After turning in the paperwork you will then be cleared to add the class yourself through AIM.
