    noun-- in*tern*ship

1 : the state or position of being an intern

2 : a period of service as an intern

    What is an Internship?

An internship is a working experience that provides meaningful, career-related work that extends a student's learning beyond the classroom. The difference between an internship and a job or shadowing experience is the intentional learning experience of an internship where you enter the work experience with a problem or question and proceed to hypothesize, research, and make conclusions. The purposes and objectives of each program will vary but each student must show their application of the scientific method. The setting may be a university, public/for profit business, a government agency, or a non-profit organization.

Your internship must involve research and scientific inquiry that applies a solid knowledge base and also practical research applications. Your proposition must be approved by Life Sciences Student Services Office in order to receive academic credit.

    Why Do an Internship?

    • Increased marketability to employers
    • On average, only 30% of graduating seniors have job offers before graduation. For students who have completed an internship, that figure rises to 58% on average.
    • Higher starting salary
    • In a recent study, interns received, on average, $2,240 more than non-interns for starting pay.
    • The majority of science-based internships are paid or offer stipends, provide housing, meals, and other compensation benefits. Your internship can be your summer job, whether in your hometown or in a far off place. Do an internship and save money at the same time. Check it out.
    • Have hands-on opportunities to work with equipment and technology that may not be available on campus. Students intern at universities, private research companies, and government organizations that have great tools to research the latest science breakthroughs. Get on the cutting edge and work in a facility (or do field work) that increases your skills in the industry.
    • Spread the gospel through example and lifestyle wherever you go. BYU interns build great relationships with other students participating in internships with them and also with the experience provider. Use this experience to share your beliefs in big & small ways.
    • "Try before you buy"
    • Evaluate specific companies or careers before you commit.
    • Meet the admissions committee at the university or medical school you intern at.
    • Explore. Don't commit to a graduate or professional program till you've been there for an internship and know their faculty, facilities, and the surrounding area.
    • If you're married, take your spouse with you and check out the area, it's opportunities, and what careers might be available for your family there.
    • Build your resume.
    • Increase opportunities within an organization for faster advancement and growth. Many interns are offered a full time position at the organization after completing an internship. You've already had hands-on experience at the organization and proved you love the work, you're an asset now.
    • Ease the transition from college to a career.
