Biography

I graduated from BYU in 1985 with a BS degree in Medical Technology (MLS). I then worked for 11 years as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Generalist mostly, in hospital and outpatient clinical laboratories. I was accepted into and completed my Specialist in Blood Bank Technology program at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston Texas in 1996. Upon completion I was hired by the UTMB School of Allied Health Sciences Clinical Laboratory Sciences program as a Faculty member (clinical instructor) teaching blood bank, clinical education, body fluid analysis, introductory hematology and research methods. I also began my MS degree studies at the University of Houston, Clear Lake which I completed in 2001. Upon completion of my MS degree I applied to and was hired as an Assistant Professor at Weber State University in their department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences. I taught Blood Bank, Education, CLS Introductory course and Research Methods at WSU both on campus and online. In 2009 I was hired at Brigham Young University as an Associate Professor (Professional Faculty) in the Microbiology and Molecular Biology department. At BYU I teach Blood Bank (Immunohematology), Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology (2009 – 2013), Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Techniques, Concept Applications in Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Basic Laboratory Operations in Medical Laboratory Sciences. I became the Director of the MLS program in 2015.

Research Interests

As a Professional Faculty, I have no research expectation nor lab so my research opportunities are limited, but I love teaching Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Teaching Interests

My first love (besides my wife, children and faith) is blood bank – transfusion medicine. I thoroughly enjoyed working in the blood bank as a laboratory professional. It was often fast and furious preparing blood for transfusion whether for a trauma victim, the operation room, newborn ICU or labor and delivery. I now feel a deep responsibility preparing our MLS students to develop good character and preparation to be an asset to the clinical lab, whether in the blood bank or any department in the clinical lab (micro, hematology or chemistry).
I also had the blessing of teaching Rel 121 for several years as a transfer faculty in the BYU Religion department – teaching the first half of the Book of Mormon was one of the most joyful blessings of my teaching career. The students brought great faith and the Holy Ghost to each class period.
