Emphasis: Genetics of Human Disease. Students may participate in the Bioinformatics Emphasis or Molecular Biology Emphasis

Current Research: The Kauwe Lab conducts research to understand the relationship between genotype and phenotype. The majority of work in the lab is focused on Alzheimer’s disease. Studies of other human diseases and phenotypes are also ongoing. Research efforts in phylogenetics, phylogeography, and life history of marine fish are also ongoing. The majority of mentored research opportunities are for bioinformatics or computer science majors who are prepared through coursework and/or experience to analyze large, complex datasets. Some opportunities to work in the lab conducting DNA extractions, genotyping, and other molecular biology techniques are also available.

Pre-requisites: Molecular Biology: Preference given to Biology and Neuroscience Majors who have taken Bio 130; Bioinformatics: Preference given to Bioinformatics Majors who have taken or are currently enrolled in CS240

Openings: Always looking for new students.
Applications are reviewed at the end of each semester, depending upon position availability.

sam_payne@byu.edu

Emphasis: Cancer, Bioinformatics, Proteomics.

Current Research: My lab does bioinformatics research, which means we use computational methods like machine learning and statistics to understand biological questions. We are interested in the proteomic consequences of DNA mutations in cancer. As part of a large national consortium, we work on cancer cohorts to identify which mutations drive cancer phenotypes and are associated with clinical outcomes. A second project in the lab is the analysis of factors that lead to a positive identification from a sexual assault kit. Projects in my lab are listed on my webpage (https://biology.byu.edu/sam-payne-lab/current-projects).

Pre-requisites: BIO165, CS 142 and CS 235.

Openings: I am taking on (limited students). Desired qualifications are listed in my webpage (https://biology.byu.edu/sam-payne-lab/recruiting-students-and-post-docs).

russell_rader@byu.edu

Emphasis: Aquatic Ecology, Invasion Biology, Restoration, and Conservation

Current Research: I am interested in determining the effects of global climate change on species interactions (e.g. facilitation, competition, and predation) along the Oregon coast. Warm surface water temperatures have caused an outbreak of sea star wasting disease (SSWD), the largest epidemic ever observed in marine animals. In the absence of their primary predators (sea stars), grazers have increased in numbers potentially resulting in increased competition for food (micro- and macro-algae). Undergraduate students would assist in exploring the outcome of competition among grazers in the rocky intertidal zone using field and lab studies at BYU and on the Oregon coast.

Pre-requisites: BIO 350 (recommended). Preference given to biology department majors.

Openings: I have 2 openings for the Winter semester, 2020.
