Biology is the study of the diversity of life on earth. Faculty and students in our department explore this diversity at multiple levels, ranging from the molecular basis for life up through global ecosystems.

A degree in Biology is for students who want to understand the living world in its broadest sense, with a focus on how and why this diversity has come about.

Our programs emphasize the interplay between organisms and their environments, revealing the ecological and evolutionary factors that shape the living world. This knowledge is intended to help students make good decisions in their personal lives and in their communities, including knowledge needed to address critical issues associated with stewardship of the living world. It also provides outstanding preparation for graduate school and for professional programs, including medical and dental school. Graduates are also well qualified to work in biotechnology fields and as biologists for state, federal, or non-government agencies.
