Budget Justification

Senior Personnel
The senior personnel for this project consist of Dr. John Smith and Dr. Bob Jones. Dr. Smith requests one summer month of support at $9,113 and Dr. Jones also requests one summer month of support at $7,789. The total request for Senior Personnel is $16,902.

For the purposes of NSF’s limitation on salary compensation, BYU defines “year” the same as the academic year, September 1 through August 31.

Other Personnel
The other personnel include one Post-doctoral Researcher at $45,000, one Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) at $20,000, and one undergraduate student at $3,000. The total request for Other Personnel is $68,000.

Fringe Benefits
BYU Fringe Benefits for faculty spring/summer salary are ***% and ***% for a Post-doctoral Researcher.

Equipment
$7,414 is requested to purchase an XYZ Brand Model 159 (quote attached).

 Travel
Domestic Travel – $6,000 is requested for travel for the project. The travel funds allow the PI and/or students to attend conferences to present papers and the results of the proposed research.

Foreign Travel – $4,000 is requested for foreign travel for the project. The travel funds will be used by the PI and Co-PI to attend international conferences to present papers and the results of the proposed research.

Participant Support Costs
None

 
Other Direct Costs
Materials and Supplies – $6,750 is requested for wafers, chemical reagents, and other consumable lab materials.

Publication Costs – $1,000 is requested to cover page charges and presentation poster costs.

Subaward – $75,000 is requested for a subaward to The University of Tennessee for their contribution to the project. A separate budget justification is provided for them.

Tuition is requested at $13,500.

Total Direct Costs – $224,633

 
Indirect Costs (F&A)
BYU’s DHHS federally negotiated indirect cost rate is 51.5% MTDC. These categories do not incur indirect costs at BYU: Tuition, participant support costs, capital equipment, and subawards after the initial $25,000 for each. The indirect costs on this project are $75,337.
 

Total Direct and Indirect Costs
The amount requested for this project is $300,000.
