Environmental Science

Program Overview

Human activity since the Industrial Revolution has lifted billions of individuals out of poverty but has also degraded the ecosystems on which all life depends. Ensuring the continued well-being of society depends on sustainable management of soil, water, air, plant, wildlife, and microbial systems. A degree in Environmental Science prepares students with hands-on curriculum to understand and improve human interactions with the environment. Students may pursue careers in research, management, consulting, medicine, and related fields.

Beyond The Classroom

Environmental Science students can pursue opportunities for mentored research with faculty in desert, forest, aquatic, arctic, urban, and agricultural ecosystems and in the BYU Environmental Analytical Laboratory (EAL). Annual study abroad opportunities allow students and faculty to learn together in diverse ecosystems and unique cultures. The BYU Environmental Science Club brings together students, faculty, and alumni in fun and educational settings. Club-organized trips each semester connect students with environmental challenges, solutions, and employers.
