Cougar Query: "Find what you love and work hard at it."

Name: Julianne Grose

BYU employee since: Fall 2008

My job at BYU is… half research and half teaching – associate professor of microbiology and molecular biology.

Currently I’m working on… understanding how living organisms regulate their metabolism and also providing alternative therapies for antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.

I’m currently reading… Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.  (This is one of my favorite books along with Les Miserables – I guess I like authors whose first name is Victor).

I get most excited about my work when… I talk to someone else who understands and appreciates the significance of it.

What makes teaching the greatest job in the world is… seeing my students get excited about something they have learned, especially when it changes the direction of their life. They have found what they truly love.

My favorite lecture to teach is… on the creation and evolution of life.

When I have 30 minutes of free time, you can find me… hiking the "Y".

My advice to incoming freshman is… to explore different opportunities, find what you love and work hard at it.

My advice to graduating seniors is… the same!

My go-to BYU Creamery ice cream flavor is… Blue Goggles (what else?, I am a lab rat!).

On Saturday mornings you’ll find me… sleeping in!

My fondest memory from my childhood was… vacationing with my family in southern Utah.
