Photo Contest Criteria
Please carefully read the following instructions, as entries must follow these guidelines to be considered.
Prompt
Celebrating Gifts of Light:
God provides many ways to illuminate a world seeking for hope and joy through the light of Christ.
Take a photograph of a life sciences experience where you witness the light of Christ in yourself, in your studies, or in others. Share your experience in the caption.
Eligibility
The contest is open to all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate majors in the College of Life Sciences.
Submission Guidelines
- You must take the photo yourself.
- All entries must have been created between August 1, 2024, and August 1, 2025
- There is a maximum of 3 entries per person. Each photo submitted will count as an entry into a drawing for a Life Sciences t-shirt.
- AI generated content is prohibited.
- Files must be either JPG or TIFF
- Photos must have a resolution of at least 4000 x 2800 pixels. For example, an iPhone 7 or better/newer or a 12MP camera sensor
- Please check out cameras from the library for maximum image quality.
- Filename must be in the following format: First Initial Last Name-1.JPG/TIFF If my name is Spencer Hall, I would submit my 3 photos as follows: ▪ SHall-1.jpg, SHall-2.jpg, SHall-3.jpg
- Captions are required to accompany each photo. They will be 50-100 words.
- Express how the photo is related to the prompt. Do not narrate or describe the photo. Captions are included in the judging process. An excellent caption elevates the consideration of the photo.
- Submitting an entry into the contest grants the BYU College of Life Sciences to use the photo for print, online, social media, marketing, and/or other promotions.
- The College of Life Sciences reserves the right to refuse any entry.
Deadline
Submissions open on March 3, 2025
Submissions close on August 1, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. MST
Submit photos here. Please allow 1-2 minutes for your file to upload, and refrain from clicking the Submit button more than once to avoid repeat submissions.
Judging
Judging begins once the contest has closed. The judging process takes approximately one month, depending on the number of submissions. We will notify winners by email. Please note, the judges reserve the right to withhold any award if no entry meets the predetermined standards.
Right to Refuse Any Entry
The College of Life Sciences reserves the right to refuse any entry.
Prizes
Top submissions will be matted, framed, and displayed in the hallways of the 2nd floor of the Life Sciences Building from July 2025 to July 2026. The printed work will be available for pickup at the start of August 2026. Frames and mats are not included. After six months, the prints will be recycled.
First Place: $500
Second Place: $250
Third Place: $100
