Department retires beloved professor

Dr. Gordon Lindsay has taught in the Public Health Department for 23 years. Before coming to BYU, he taught health at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana and served as chair of the Delaware County Board of Health. Dr. Lindsay also worked as the risk coordinator for the Utah Department of Health for four years, and as a health teacher in the public schools. His teaching and research interests have included substance abuse, alcohol and tobacco policy, health determinants, and impacts of healthcare spending on public health. Dr. Lindsey has been the recipient of many awards including the Karl G. Maeser Excellence in Teaching Award in 2012. He is married to his sweetheart, Kathleen Lindsay, and they are the parents of 5 amazing children and 21 remarkable grandchildren.Dr. Lindsay's lecture gave a brief history of public health with highlights from his personal career. Tobacco control was just one of the many research areas he spoke on, coupled with some classic public health storytelling including "The Great Sausage Duel of 1865" between Otto von Bismark and Rudolf Virchow in Prussia (see recorded lecture for the full story). Dr. Lindsay readily acknowledged the challenge public health professionals face as the unsung heroes of the health world in that they implement large scale behavioral changes without receiving any of the credit.
