3rd Place Winner for Inspiring Learning Contest 2025
In 1920, my great-grandfather and his family left a city called Camargo, in the state of Chihuahua, México, and moved to the United States. They were hard-working people who desired a better life for themselves and future generations. My family has always been grateful for their decision to risk everything in pursuit of greater opportunity. Although we've lived here since then, I still remember the stories of hardship my family faced to provide and succeed.
Unfortunately, within the Mexican community, there tends to be a decreased emphasis on higher education. Many individuals forgo a college degree and enter the workforce early, often out of necessity. This can lead to limited job choices and, in many cases, becoming stuck in a cycle with few opportunities for advancement.
Ever since I was a child, my dream was to be a doctor. Looking back, I have no idea how that dream came to be. Mexican culture places a high value on family, and often on following the career paths of parents and grandparents. No one in my family had ever worked in the medical field or anything remotely related. I remember exploring other careers as I grew up: construction, business, and more, but I always came back to my original desire to become a doctor. My family knew about my dream but didn’t fully understand what it would take to reach it.
When I was accepted into college, I was thrilled to begin my journey. At first, I was overwhelmed as I quickly realized the enormous task ahead. But over time, I began to find my footing. I involved myself more and started making meaningful progress.
As I began engaging in experiences that prepared me for a medical career, I realized how fulfilling it was. It filled me with passion and excitement to see how I could bless the lives of others with both my earthly knowledge and spiritual light. During this time, I reflected on my childhood and the constant desire I had to become a doctor. I still wondered why that flame had been lit for so long. It wasn’t until a few months ago that it finally clicked.
I was volunteering for the Y-Serve group Anatomy Academy, where we visit elementary schools to teach basic anatomy. One week, we were covering the digestive system and explaining what happens when we eat. We used a visual demonstration to show how different body parts function. As one of the volunteers explained the process, the entire class erupted in a collective “ewww.” But I noticed one student looking confused and a little sad. I walked over and realized the student hardly understood any English and was struggling to keep up. I explained the lesson in Spanish, and they immediately understood why the class reacted the way it did. I also saw the excitement they felt at finally being part of the group. They began asking lots of questions, and I was thrilled to answer and share that moment with them. I left that day with a new friend.
At my current job, 30–40% of our patients are Spanish speakers. Every day, I get to share my talents by translating for them and helping them feel heard and understood during their medical visits. I’m able to connect with them in a meaningful way. Coming to the doctor can be intimidating—especially when you don’t share a language with your physician. I take great joy in easing that nervousness and uncertainty for the patients I interact with. I relate these experiences to Doctrine and Covenants 90:11, which says, “Every man shall hear the fullness of the gospel in his own tongue, and in his own language.” Around the world, people hear the gospel in a language they understand, which allows them to more fully feel the Spirit. I believe I am sharing my light in a similar way. Patients are feeling the fruits of the Spirit as they grow more comfortable and confident in their medical visits.
There is a severe underrepresentation of Hispanic doctors in the medical field. While 18.9% of the U.S. population is Hispanic, only 7.5% of physicians are. As my light shines now, I know it will continue to shine as I inspire others in my community and beyond to pursue their dreams. Through my hard work and dedication, I hope to give back to my community and make my family proud.
Throughout my work in the medical field, I have experienced a personal transformation. I am happier, more energized, and I thrive when I’m around people. My social skills have grown immensely, and I’ve discovered a deep desire to serve. What I am learning and doing now is deeply fulfilling. Christ has given me a glimpse of who I can become and the light I can one day share more fully. I know that as I continue to prove that He can trust me, He will bless me with more of His light to share with God’s children.
