Research Interests

The primary research focus of my lab is the effect of old-age and diabetes on skeletal muscle metabolism, mass and function. Understanding the mechanisms that control muscle mass is important in understanding and developing behavioral and pharmacological treatments for many conditions where muscle mass is compromised, including aging, muscle injury, diabetes, and so forth. We are particularly interested in the molecular signaling pathways [e.g. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR)] that are important in the control of muscle growth, and how those pathways are affected by various stimuli such as exercise, damage, inflammation, diet, obesity and inactivity.
