Biography

I received BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Brigham Young University and a PhD in Engineering Sciences with a focus on Biomedical Engineering from Dartmouth College. My early academic research focused on human disease monitoring and diagnostics for hydrocephalus, breast cancer, and traumatic brain injury.

I left academia to pursue work in the MedTech industry for thirteen years. My work included a startup in advanced surgical energy, consulting, contracting, and finally as a senior principal engineer at Johnson and Johnson MedTech (Ethicon) where I worked on advanced visualization technologies for manual and robotic surgery.

Research Interests

My current research interests are in diagnostic tools for healthcare with a focus on low- and middle-income (LMIC) countries. This includes medical technologies for effective disease diagnosis and/or treatment, improving health care delivery, and medical device security. I am excited by technologies that have a positive impact on people's lives.

Teaching Interests

My teaching interests are broad because it takes a broad education to be a decent medical device engineer. I focus on embedded systems, including microprocessors, FPGAs, and cybersecurity. However, I also enjoy teaching about sensor technologies for monitoring physiological systems.
