In the BYU College of Life Sciences, we value both scientific and spiritual truths, and we affirm that all truths are compatible. In this issue of Impact, you’ll learn about some of our students’ research that is revealing scientific truths in a broad range of areas, such as cancer diagnostics, plant science, the human oral microbiome, and entomology. At the same time, these students are learning fundamental spiritual truths.
One student reflects on the value of learning from a professor who teaches that “God knows everything, and He allows part of His creation to be revealed to us as we seek diligently.” Another relates the spiritual sense of a calling he feels toward cancer research as a way to serve others. A professor models the integration of scientific inquiry and spirituality when he shares, “I’ve just had so many experiences . . . where I solved issues in my research by getting on my knees and seeking help.”
As we pursue our college vision to “inspire learning and discovery in the life sciences for the benefit of the world,” that benefit comes not only through scientific advances that improve the health and well-being of humans and our planet but also through the spiritual strength of the young leaders and innovators in our college who are preparing to serve throughout the world.
