Biography
Nathan Cherrington, PhD, ATS, is the Musil Family Endowed Chair, 1885 Society Distinguished Scholar, and a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Arizona. He serves as the Associate Dean for Research in the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, where he directs the NIEHS P30 Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center and the NIEHS T32 Training in Environmental Toxicology of Human Disease. He also serves as Interim Director for the College's Center for Toxicology and holds joint appointments as Professor in Clinical Translational Sciences and in the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.
Dr. Cherrington received a B.S. in Zoology from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in Toxicology from North Carolina State University, with an emphasis on xenobiotic metabolism. He completed postdoctoral training in drug metabolism and disposition at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
Author of more than 200 journal articles and abstracts on drug metabolism and disposition, inter-individual variability in drug response, and mechanisms of liver injury, he focuses on translational research connecting environmental and pharmacological toxicity. He is the founder of PhenoKinetics, which has developed a diagnostic biomarker for liver disease, and holds two patents. He has received 19 major research grants and serves on several editorial boards, including as an associate editor for Toxicological Sciences and Drug Metabolism and Disposition. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences and a recipient of the BYU Alumni Achievement Award.
Nathan served a mission in Bristol, England, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Dr. Jana Cherrington, whom he met in Biology 200 at BYU, and they have four children.
