Emphasis: Cancer, Bioinformatics, Proteomics.

Current Research: My lab does bioinformatics research, which means we use computational methods like machine learning and statistics to understand biological questions. We are interested in the proteomic consequences of DNA mutations in cancer. As part of a large national consortium, we work on cancer cohorts to identify which mutations drive cancer phenotypes and are associated with clinical outcomes. A second project in the lab is the analysis of factors that lead to a positive identification from a sexual assault kit. Projects in my lab are listed on my webpage (https://biology.byu.edu/sam-payne-lab/current-projects).

Pre-requisites: BIO165, CS 142 and CS 235.

Openings: I am taking on (limited students). Desired qualifications are listed in my webpage (https://biology.byu.edu/sam-payne-lab/recruiting-students-and-post-docs).

Russell Rader

June 18, 2019
Professor
Phone: (801) 422-9159
Room: 4025 LSB
russell_rader@byu.edu

Emphasis: Aquatic Ecology, Invasion Biology, Restoration, and Conservation

Current Research: I am interested in determining the effects of global climate change on species interactions (e.g. facilitation, competition, and predation) along the Oregon coast. Warm surface water temperatures have caused an outbreak of sea star wasting disease (SSWD), the largest epidemic ever observed in marine animals. In the absence of their primary predators (sea stars), grazers have increased in numbers potentially resulting in increased competition for food (micro- and macro-algae). Undergraduate students would assist in exploring the outcome of competition among grazers in the rocky intertidal zone using field and lab studies at BYU and on the Oregon coast.

Pre-requisites: BIO 350 (Ecology) is recommended. Preference given to biology department majors.
